A guest identified on-air as Sen. Tim Sheehy said the United States "now has Sharia law," naming Dearborn, Michigan.
We rate that false — truth score 0.12, confidence 0.90 — and trace the claim's most durable detail back to a 2013 satire site.
On the August 4, 2026 episode of The Benny Show, the segment opens with real footage: Nick Shirley chased and threatened with a knife in Ceuta, Spain, and provocateur Jake Lang assaulted at an Arbaeen procession in Dearborn (one arrest announced August 3). Neither is a legal finding about any American jurisdiction. Both are offered as evidence for one.
We steelman the claim first. Voluntary religious arbitration is real and enforceable under the Federal Arbitration Act — identically for Muslims, Orthodox Jews and Christians. Trial courts sometimes get religious-belief questions wrong; S.D. v. M.J.R. is the example, and it was reversed on appeal. Texas has live disputes and open state investigations. Dearborn is genuinely 54.5% Middle Eastern or North African.
Then we land the verdict. No U.S. jurisdiction has adopted Islamic law as governing law. PolitiFact rated the Dearborn-courts version False in 2011. Snopes traced the "Dearborn implements Sharia" story to a satirical article shared 88,000+ times. The DOJ closed its EPIC City probe in June 2026 with no evidence of discrimination, and a federal judge found no evidence of Sharia in the affiliated mosque's funeral practices while noting "plausible bias" in the state's investigation. The path runs satire to chain email to model statute to a bill number — and nothing new was proven at any step.
